Is sustainable and environmentally friendly the same thing?

No, not quite.

Making a better environmental choice means that you act in a way that has the least possible impact on the environment. Much of what falls under this term will also be sustainable - but the concept of sustainable holds more.

To create sustainable development, the world must work in three areas: environment, social conditions and economics.

This is called the three pillars of sustainable development, and it is the connection between these three pillars that determines whether something is sustainable.

ENVIRONMENT

What does the environment have to do with sustainability?

Climate and environment the dimension of sustainable development is about taking care of nature and the climate. We humans are completely dependent on nature. The way we use nature's resources today has major consequences for the planet and us humans.

Greenhouse gases destroy the ecosystem, which makes us vulnerable to natural disasters, threatens our livelihoods and creates conflicts in the fight for natural resources.

SOCIALLY

What does social conditions have to do with sustainability?

The social part of sustainable development is about ensuring that all people have a good and fair basis for decent life.

We humans are part of nature and important resources for the world, just like water, forests and the sun, but for everyone to use their resources, human rights must be fulfilled.

ECONOMY

What does economics have to do with sustainability?

The econimic dimension of sustainable development is about ensuring financial security for people and society.

A sustainable economy is fair and lasting, so that everyone can afford to meet their needs now and in the future. One way to contribute to a more even distribution is to think about what we buy and how it is made.

Today, there is a growing gap between rich and poor. Poverty and inequality lead to unrest and division in the population and threaten sustainable development.
